The 4th stop of the 2007 North American Wild in the Parks contest tour went down at The 3rdLair Skatepark in Minneapolis, MN Sunday July 8! We’ve been eagerly anticipating our return to the twin cities of Minneapolis/St Paul for over a year. Though locals claim Minnesota is the home of 10,000 lakes, I didn’t have time to verify that. One thing they can definitely get away with claiming is an insane skatepark. The 3rd Lair Skatepark & Skateshop is a masterpiece! Containing multiple bowls, mini ramps and street courses, you run the risk of losing all concept of time while visiting. The 2007 WITP marked our 2nd annual stop at the park. Last year we were witness to some seriously progressive skating that had our heads shaking well into the flight home. Would we see a new crop of talent or some familiar faces take their skating to the next level? The answer of course, would be both of those scenarios.
Would-be competitors were hanging around the park waiting to sign up well before the contest. By the time registration began shortly before 10, it was already hot enough to cook a burger in the mini-ramp!!
The day’s proceedings kicked off with the 14 and Under Division. The three WITP contest zones were thoroughly dismantled as these kids made their winner intentions clear! Jack Olson of 2006 WITP fame was large and in-charge from the starting horn, all the way through the finals! Andrew Leibman and David Munson were hot on his heels and challenged right to the end. After all was said and skated, it was the mighty Jack Olson taking home 1st with Andrew Leibman and David Munson coming in 2nd and 3rd respectively.
Before we could catch our breath it was time for the 15 and Over group to take center stage. These guy ripped and threw down the difficult with ease. From huge backside bigspins to switch lipslides, these guys nailed tricks like it ain’t no thang! When it came time to name names, Tyler Ryan’s consistent trickery earned him 1st while Eli Rashad and Nate Hynun rounded out the top three.
After a quick break for lunch, the Open Division grabbed the reins and “sleighed” it (that was a funny one, for best results, think Santa’s “sleigh”) ahem. Every trick known to mankind was thrown down with a precision and consistency not seen thus far on the 2007 tour. Come the $15,000 WITP Championships (Austin, TX – Sept 22), I suspect some of the rippers who qualified in Minneapolis will be skating away with some serious cash!!
Thanks to Mark, Steve, M-Rod, Partybus and the entire crew at 3rd Lair Skatepark! We’re stoked to be a part of the scene there. Thanks also to Andy Conrad, Brandon “Brando” Janssen for helping us hold things down as well as our three judges, Alex Fenner, Marlon Smith-Dennis and Greg Ytterbo. We couldn’t have done it without everyone’s help! Last but not least, thanks to Powell and Blind Skateboards, Thrasher, Slap and Skateboarder mags, Nike SB, DVS, Circa, Spitfire wheels and Digital Skateboarding for supporting the WITP with prizes!
