The 2007 North American Wild in the Parks tour headed North of the border for a stop at Vancouver, Canada’s Railside Skatepark Sat July 15.
The weather of late has been hot and with no relief on the horizon, we knew we were in for another scorcher. If you haven’t had a chance to partake, Railside skatepark is a work of art and possesses arguably one of the finest street sections in the greater Vancouver area. This was our second annual WITP tour stop at the park so we were looking forward to seeing how much everyone has progressed. We weren’t disappointed!
Last year’s three WITP zones remained in effect: The first was a down rail spanning a 9 set plus step up, the second area was a medium sized pyramid stradled by a round bar and the third WITP zone consisted of a flat-down-flat-down rail, hubba and step up.
Keeping with WITP tradition, the contest got underway with the 14 and Under Division kicking things off. Familiar faces like Kyle Nolan were ripping around the park tearing up the three contest areas. This division was highlighted by a backside bigspin flip, smooth back lips and one huge fontside flip down the big set in zone 3!
After watching the groms throw down, the 15 and Over Division knew they had their work cut out for them! Not to be deterred, they stepped up and outdid themselves. Progressive trickery ensued as these guys were on a mission and didn’t let up until the final whistler blew!
The Open Division skaters were the last to compete and didn’t seem to have any trouble putting the “Wild” in the “Wild in the Parks”! With notable heavies such as John Hanlon, Matt Berger, Dustin Montey and Stacy Gabriel in attendance, our expectations of a throwdown-showdown were met and exceeded! Hanlon’s kickflip back tail in zone three, Arty Lew switch flipping the 9-set first try and Hashbrowns huge frontside flip over the double set were just a few highlights from the Open Division!
Thanks to Russ Brummer, Jonathan Reichert and the rest of the crew at the City of Port Coquitlam for all their support before and during the event. Thanks also to Liam Ellicott, Dirk Yarmush and Jay Stretch for judging, Persia Stevens for tabulating, Rob Williamson and Leroy Seymour for manning the barbeques and Danny Koriath for filming and snapping photos. Thanks to NRI Dist and S&J Sales for helping us find load up on prizes at the last minute. That was a close one!
