2007 Wild In The Parks: Stop #7 Results by Jarnold & Brando
The 7th stop on the 2007 North American Wild in the Parks tour went down at Ottawa's Legacy Skatepark Sat Aug 4, 2007. As you may or may not know, Ottawa is Canada's capital so prior to the event we were more then a little anxious to partake in the numerous activities and events the city has to offer. Ottawa is also my hometown so our crew was larger the life and ready to build on last year's WITP. In addition to myself (Jeff Arnold), flying in for the event and extracurricular activities was Minnesota's Brandon Janssen, Denver's Jared King, Vancouver's Leroy Seymour and Kamloops' Liam Ellicott. After exchanging a few handshakes at the Ottawa airport, we were off to check into the hotel and soak up the amazing sights, sounds and people that make up Ottawa. With both English and French spoken as main languages as well as historical eighteenth century architecture and modern technology, Ottawa truly has all the bases covered! If you only get a chance to spend one day there, you will NOT be disappointed.
Pulling into the parking lot of Legacy skatepark Saturday morning, we were greeted by a throng of eager competitors and spectators who had already converged on our coordinates. Following a smooth but busy registration, we had a brief contest meeting in both English and French! Merci to Top of the World's Eric Dionne for helping us with the announcements en francais. Legacy skatepark is a relatively new concrete masterpiece that is giving birth to a new generation of rippers in Ottawa. Apparently the park is no secret to outsiders because among the 100 or so competitors we saw kids all the way from Pennsylvania, Vermont, Toronto, Kingston, Quebec City and Montreal! With delightful weather and a scads of people on standby we were eager to get the day underway!
Following standard WITP protocol, we kicked off the days event with the 14 and under age bracket. From the very beginning spectators could see they were in for a treat. Zones 1 and 2 were attacked immediately saving zone 3's double stair set for the finale. After stomping solid tricks in zones 1 and 2, Zach Hickoff and Darryl Galaraga were having a showdown in zone 3. Zach going for a double kickflip and and Darryl going for a backside kickflip with the crowd on their feet. Extending to finals for a few extra minutes allowed both of them and others to land their final tricks. After the anarchy was concluded and the smoke had cleared, Darryl Galaraga took home 1st closely followed by Zack Hickoff (2nd) and Alex Dumoulin (3rd).
Showing us the magic had just begun to happen, the 15 and over bracket was hyped to take their skating to the next level. After the 14 & under group, the expectations were high and the older skaters rose to the occasion and brought the house down. With smooth style, speed, and solid efforts all around this division was landing some solid tech trickery. Flip tricks to grinds and slides seemed to be the way to stay at the top of the score charts. You could see these kids wanted the gear and the invite the to $15,000 WITP Championships in the Austin, TX (Sept 22)! Tommy Keith ended up at the top, with close Alessandro Seccareccia 2nd, and oliver Jolin-Roch rounding out the top three.
The day's skating concluded with the Pro-Am Division showing us how it gets done! Serious heavies were thrown down with calculated abandon and the three zones were slaughtered quicker then farm animals with mad cow disease! Everyone seemed to be ripping! From J-F Renaud to Sami Labre to Mitch Barrett, these guys were on fired and were guaranteeing a photo finish. A huge nollie flip, hardflip, nollie 5-0 and a terror of a three-flip were just a few of the notable tricks that had our eyes bigger then dinner plates! A heck of a day t say the least!
Thanks to Gord McGregor and the City of Ottawa for giving us the opportunity to come back for another WITP. Looking forward to many more! Thanks also to Eric Dionne at Top of the World for judging and helping us organize the event as well as our other two judges Tim Howey and Brandon Janssen. Thanks also to Christy Raymond for crunching numbers and keeping the good vibes strong! Thanks to Tyler Ellement and Natasha Lucky for helping regulate as well as all the brands that kicked in gear to help us stoke the kids: Plan B, Independent, Skateboarder, Nike, vans, Bones, Slap,Thrasher, Powell.
