The 2007 North American Wild in the Parks tour slammed into Taunton, MA for a stop a Skater’s Edge skatepark Sun Aug 12!
Taunton is located about 40 minutes South of Boston and is full of history. Skater’s Edge (391 Water St W) is located in an old industrial area consisting of huge brick factories that have long since shut down. You’ll find the park inside one of these buildings. On Saturday, our friend John Webster made the three-hour drive from New Hampshire to partake in our exploration of Taunton. A few minute’s walk from the park, we came across a sizeable full-pipe and put it to good use (photo to the left). Super fun. In case you’ve never been, the park itself is absolutely mental! It has been divided up into several different areas containing mini-ramps, bowls, a capsule, two street courses and even a foam pit for hucking yourself into! Dave Audle is the man behind the magic so be sure to shake his hand when you drop in to check it for yourself.
The Wild in the Parks kicked off in fine form Sunday morning with the 14 & Under Division getting tricks first. It was great to see some familiar faces like Seth Schiavo, who slayed the West Chester, PA WITP back in 2005. Seth and the rest of the 14 – group were tearing around the park like possessed madmen! Stylish front boards, back lips and kickflip boardslides are just a few of the tricks that jump the front of my mind. Solid and consistent trickery in all three zones saw Andrew Guillenatte take home 1st, Seth Schiavo 2nd and Mike Imes claim 3rd! Just missing the top three by a few points was Nora Vasconcellos. She ripped and made history by becoming the only female to place in a Wild in the Parks! Hopefully she’ll be showing the guys how it’s done this fall in Austin, Texas at the $15,000 Championships (Sat Sept 22)!
The 15 & Over group was up next and definitely didn’t need any extra motivation to rip the place apart! The great Forest Bailey made a cameo and had the judges shaking their heads. If this division had a weak link, it was hard to find. The ten set in zone 1 was attacked without mercy much to the enjoyment of the spectators! Huge kickflips, nollie flips, backside 180s and three flips were thrown down with unnatural precision! All in all, the 15 and Over Division ripped and had everyone wondering where things could go from there? In the end, Forest Bailey took 1st, Nolan Cormier 2nd and Giorgio Villone 3rd.
The Open/Pro-Am Division grabbed center stage and put on a show that won’t soon be forgotten! The biggest story here was Jordan Maxham (#123)! This guy was on a serious mission and showed his 5th place WITP finish two years ago was just the beginning! Hardlips, three-flips, and a scary-big f/s 360 on the kicker had everyone on their feet! Also making waves with more then their share of hammers was Mark Nicholson, Kevin Mullette and Dillon Buss. Though the top three were incredibly close, the scoresheet had Jordan Maxham claiming 1st, Mark Nicholson 2nd and Kevin Mullette 3rd! What a day!
A huge thanks to Dave Audle and the entire crew at Skater’s Edge Skatepark. We really appreciate all your support and are already looking forward to coming back next year! Thanks also to Volcom’s own Paul Danchak, plus his crew; Guido Silvestri and Brian Higbee for regulating the scene. There are only two qualifying stops left before the $15,000 2007 Witp Championsips (Sept 22, Austin, TX)! Get on it!
