2008 International Volcom Wild In The Parks: Australia Results
The skaters in Adelaide get right into these events and everyone there was super keen to be part of the day. From store owners running the BBQ, to mothers helping us unlock the council electricity, the day was on fire from the get go.
We started off with the juniors and can these little guys skate! There were 11 year old kids with better back smiths than Mike Carrol. With tranny skills and tech skills to match, the top 3 places were gonna be a battle to the end. By the end of the heats we had cut the heard down to a modest 8, and everyone of these kids were hungry for the tittle. In the end it came down to the top 3. In 3rd we had Tyler Zora, he skated fast and hard all day even competing in the best trick comp, this Is a hard feet if any of you have skated in the heat that Adelaide can produce. To have the stamina to last all day in that heat shows some real determination. In 2nd was my favourite skater of the day Cailean Holland this little guy was skating with style and control way beyond his mere 12 years. With a array of flips up the euro gap, airs in the tranny section and my favourite back smiths of the entire event, this kid is surely someone to keep an eye on. Then there was the numero uno, The first placer! Thomas Alexander this kid showed up late, the heats were all over, but he asked me to try and gather more kids for another heat because he was super keen to skate. I did, he was stoked he won what more is there to say…the kid new he had it in the bag from the get go… confident and stylish. Nice work!
After the junior comp we had the girls out there. With only 3 entrants we had them go out and just have fun with it. In 3rd we have Katherine Williams, who skated the kicker to ledge with nice 5-0 grinds and a nice kicky up the euro gap. Second place was last years winner Jennifer oaks she showed up after knocking herself out the day before…strapped on a helmet and showed us what she had.. nice work….. showed a lot of guts to get out there after an experience like that the day before. Then we had 1st place Maddison Hay, this little lady was skating the deep end of the bowl like it was a 4ft tranny. With backside airs at coping level she had me in amazement. Well done Maddison and to all the girls that skated. You all ripped!
Before we ran the opens, electric thought it would be a good idea to throw out some money for best trick. With bodies flying everywhere, trying there best to win the cash, it came down to a 3 man final, with the first person to land a trick being granted the winner. Well done to Justin Edward for taking that one out.
So as it usually goes the older guys are always late to the comp, so we held out as long as we could to make sure everyone arrived…and dam were they keen for this comp.
The turn out was easily the highest level of skating if seen at a Wild In The Parks to date. This was a tough one for the judges, with tricks getting landed at all times on all obstacles, there eyes and necks started to bug out from turning from one part of the park to the next to be sure they didn’t miss anything. In the end we had Josh Morrell in 3rd, this guy was shredding all day with insane tricks all over the park. In 2nd place another late comer Brett Young who showed he was sorry for putting us out and smashed the rail with every trick under the sun, my highlight was his backside blunt. It took a few slams to get but well worth it in the end. Then we had Justin in 1st. I met him the day before at the park obviously getting in some last minute training, which definitely worked. Justin Edwards has a great style and is super consistent, nailing tricks back to back all day and also taking out the best trick comp. A true competitor and a humble one at that too. The day went off without any trouble and it all has to do with the amazing support of the local skate scene and the super hard work from Dan Ivett. A big shout out to all involved in the day and I cant wait to get back there next year and do it all over again.

It was an on and off day for weather, greeted with cloudy, windy conditions we knew the day was going to be a challenge. Luckily the Perth skate community had the a great attitude and the day went down in an extended fashion allowing all of the 90 strong competitor field to thrown down and have some good old fun at Manning skate park South Perth.
This year saw the coming of age for many of last year’s shredders with young Jess Ballard stepping up and winning the 15 and under division with stand out style and precision all over the park with back lips on the rail, front flips off the quarter to name a few ousting Lewis Roden in second and Kai Eardley in third.
Girls division stuck around and held strong until the finals which saw Sophie Williams nail kick flips up the pyramid and hit the rail with ease taking the joyous title in her second ever skate contest and an invitation to Sydney for the WITP Championships next May with Sarah Howarth and Kaitlyn Traynor in second and third respectively.
Open division was huge, over 45 competitors!! Everyone came out to kill it and last year’s winner Frodo managed to fall on his fingers during practice to take him out of contention and off to hospital only to return that afternoon with a big grin and tales of the whistle. Barry Mansfield took top honors with stylish hard flips over the hip with second place Harry Clark’s highlight including a mini airwalk over the hip, Andy Watson in third out of a super talented pool of WA shredders.
Top 3 finalists of each division are invited to the OZ/NZ Wild In The Parks Championships on May 2nd 2009, Sydney where the Junior and Open division champions will be crowned and awarded Volcom paid tickets to the United States to represent Australia and New Zealand in the World WITP Champs held in the United States of America and battle for over $30,000.00 cash purse up for grabs!
Thanks to Brendon Sim for hilarious commentating & keeping the vibe alive in the tough conditions, judges Karman, Chris and Luke, Mike for the photos, Nashy & Spillsy on the job and to the competitors and friends for coming down, sticking around in the harsh weather and all still having a bunch of good times!
