2008 International Volcom Wild In The Parks: Portugal Results
There were some rain showers last Saturday in Lisbon but it didn’t affect our annual Wild in the Park because it took place in the new Indoor Skate Community Skatepark in Torres Vedras, the only indoor park in Portugal.
Around 130 skaters signed up at noon and filled almost every park spot…some were skating hard since the morning so the walking to the other side of the area was a bit sketchy with human torpedoes lacerating every obstacle and boards flying all over the place…
To motivate and fuel everyone, a barbecue got fired up by the Skatepark staff and some redbull cans were distributed by some lovely hostesses. While the smell of grilled meat was diffusing into the park the contest started with the 15 and under division.
There were in total almost ten kids under 10 years old trying to hit the 3 spots as hard as they could and watching them trying to do as good as their elders was really good to watch. The qualifying heats were madness, everyone wanting to pull his trick no matter if the course was clear, or if somebody else is dropping as well…you spice it up with some rock & roll and the heat and you have an explosive mix. Young Marta Nery made it to the finals by doing some tricks on the 3 spots and getting this way the “best girl” title. Filipe Cordeiro was skating solid throwing combos of flippy tricks on the pyramid while Ivo Barata landed the biggest kickflip of this category but they couldn’t make it to the podium due to a missing trick in zone 3. Simao Menezes skated good on every spot and placed 3rd during the final, so did Rodrigo Albuquerque with some nice tailslides in zone 2 and good tricks on the rail in zone 1 launching him at the 2nd place. Duarte Pombo skated solid that day on every spot and won the contest, plenty of Volcom products, a new skate deck and a spot at the European final in Amsterdam, good job! The 16 and over category was on fire with plenty of talented skaters from all over the country and some national skate legends…zillions of tricks were pulled and the show was good to witness.
The youngest were just watching their local heroes getting gnar, supertech or smooth…but at the end of the day local Paulo Franco “chuva” was combinating everything and ended into the 3rd place: big lipslides transfer on the bank, massive bs flips on the pyramid and plenty more…he works at the park and one can say he enjoys it! Helder Lima was all smile all day long, helping out with the BBQ, telling jokes to the judges or speaking French to girls…he skated a lot too, despite the most f#cked up shoe you ever skated with, he managed to destroy every spot to win an invite to the European WITP final and also finish at the 2nd place… Winner of the day was Ruben Rodriguez, Mr Trick Machine…he was injured and didn’t want to skate the final but since he had to do it he tried to land every trick 1st try…bigspin bs lip, Bs double flip, fs feeble on the big rail, huge 3-6 flips, gap to bs lip, cabalerial flips etccc…An advice to everyone that will attend to the WITP final: watch out for RUBEN!! The day ended with some live Rock and roll (SK6), a good skate session with our judges Alain Goikotxea y Norberto Mena and of course some cold ones…
Thanks to everyone that helped out that day, Indoor Skate Community Skatepark crew, Miguel for DJing, Fallen, Red Bull, SK6 members for playing and MCing, Alain and Mena for judging and basically everyone that came that day. Thanks to Indoor Skate Community, Sk6 (rock band), Red Bull, Clean Spirit skateboards, Fallen shoes, Goodwood wheels, skatebyte.com and zonaradical.pt. See you next year!
