2008 Volcom Wild In The Parks: Stop #10

The 10th stop of the 2008 Wild in the Parks tour went down on Saturday, August 2nd at Legacy Skatepark in Canada’s capital!

Traveling to the city of Ottawa, Ontario is one for the record books. The contest falls on a long weekend for Canada. This meant the there were tons of people out and about taking in all the sights and sounds that the capital city has to offer. Outside markets and government buildings were bustling with both citizens and tourists alike. Our adventures lead us to an ambitious thrashing of the local park fountain, photos of a few monuments, followed by an adult beverage or two in Ottawa’s historic Byward Market. To make sure that we didn’t miss a minute of the next day; we awoke to the sound a man playing bagpipes outside of our hotel room around 7:30 a.m. After resisting the penetrating sound as long as possible, we decided it was a sign we needed to get up and get the day underway.

With ominous clouds in the background and the sun shining a halo over the Legacy Skate Park the 14 & under division had no hesitation starting things off with a bang! Breaking things off in zones 1 and 2, (the ledge and rail sections) you could see that these groms knew how to get things done! This said, it seemed the big youth were saving their best for the spectator-filled 4x4 double set! With technical precision and solid style, this battle ended up with Jonathan Jodoin claiming 1st, Dan Bereza taking home 2nd, and Arturo Caray rounding out he top three.

The riders in the 15 & Over division were next to skate and were clearly chomping at the bit to throw down in the three WITP zones. Right out of the gate you could see that these competitors were dressed to impress. Throwing down big spin board slides, tre flipping the double set, and a styled out bs feeble 180 just to name a few. With four heats of 15 + division riders, the judges had their hands full but were up to the challenge. When all was said and done, Darryle Galaraga grabbed top honors in taking home 1st, Jamie Bennett 2nd, and Andrew Bennett locked down 3rd.

The Pro-Am Division or “the show” as we like to call it, was next to take on the challenge. If I could say one thing about these guys, it would have to be consistency. No matter where you were looking there was a trick going down. All the zones were attacked at full force with switch 180 to smith grind, kickflip back lips, and nollie heelflip nose slides going down all over the place. We could see that these guys needed the two minute overtime session in order to figure out the top spots. It was going to be a close one. Once again the spectators gathered around to make a huge gallery in zone 1 for this special addition of time. To top everything off, Matt Canadien stomped a perfect heelflip crooked grind down the double set ledge to shut down the competition! Sami Labbe ended up with the top spot, followed by Matt Canadien in 2nd, and Phil Lajeunesse in 3rd!

We would like to thank the City of Ottawa and Top of the World boardshop for making the WITP possible. Thanks also to Eric Gravenish, Leroy Seymour and myself (Brandon Janssen) for judging as well as Volcom’s own Tyler Ellement and Christina Campbell for helping support the scene from A to Z! Thanks to Electric Visual for throwing in shades and $50 for their “Hype of the Day” award!
