2008 Volcom Wild In The Parks: Stop #6
Stop number six of the 2008 Wild in the Parks tour went off under Colorado skies at the Denver Skatepark Saturday June 28!
Visiting Colorado always means a good time is in store. Jared King, who travels with us on the Wild in the Parks tour calls Denver home and always goes out of his way to show us a few of the tricks in his bag. In addition to pointing out some of Denver’s classic street spots, we also visited the “poor man’s waterpark”. This is a fast moving stream that goes down through a series of caves while throwing you over a cliff or two. Pretty radical. Check the top photo on the left to get a visual. Over time, the water has polished the rocks smooth and you can get going pretty quick, whether you want to or not! The stream was freezing and pretty shallow when we were there, but it was still super fun. The spot is top secret, but you should be able to find it if you befriend a local.
The 14 & Under Division got the party started just before noon. As this was our first year visiting Denver’s outdoor park, we were a little concerned about the menacing clouds hanging low over us. Thankfully things began to blow over just as the 14 & Under rippers took over the park. The division was packed with a ton of rippers and they skated like it was 1999! We were dealing with a triple homicide as all three WITP contest zones were ruthlessly murdered and even Matlock couldn’t pick up the pieces! When the carnage ended, it was Jesse Mondragon taking 1st, Valen Sabin snuck into 2nd and Dominic Garcia locked down 3rd!
The 15 & Over Division was up next and it was clear from the get-go that these guys were determined to steal the show! It didn’t take long for hammers to be applied in all three WITP contest zones. I can distinctly recall conversation pieces such as nollie b/s bigspins, switch crooks and kickflip 5-0 grinds. The top scores were separated by only a few points but after Brando plugged them into our tabulating supercomputer, Louis Medine took 1st, Angelo Farino 2nd and Eric Carrera threw down a close third!
The Pro-Am division was the final act of the day and was definitely one to remember! After the contest, the judges admitted to being blown away by the level of skating that went down. All the stops were pulled out leaving ourselves, as well as the hundreds of spectators slack-jawed. The tricks that went down were many and a can of worms that perhaps is better watched then read. Check the video above and the photo sequences to the left!
Thanks to the City of Denver for letting us take over the skatepark. Thanks to Joe Triscari, Jon Olsson and Nick Hardy for judging and Volcom’s own Jon Strieby for all his support. Thanks to Red Bull for lending us their PA system and to Electric for kicking in some shades for the winners, not to mention $50 cash for their "Hype of the day" award!
