2008 Volcom Wild In The Parks: Stop #7
The 7th stop on the 2008 Wild in the Parks tour came and went in a flash here in Vancouver, Canada on Sunday, July 6th, 2008!
If you’ve never come across an opportunity to partake, Vancouver is one of the most beautiful cities you’re likely to find on your travels. It rests in the province of British Columbia on the Pacific Coast. You’ll need to allocate at least a few weeks to accommodate even a fraction of the things you can see and do. There are plenty of skateparks for the city’s 2 million + people and the close proximity of mountains and ocean open up a plethora of possibilities. The photo below (and the one in the top left) was taken from my place on “English Bay” at sunset. Girls dig the view... The 3rd annual Vancouver Wild in the Parks was again held at Railside Skatepark. The joint consists of an expansive street section with a few bowls thrown in there for good measure. Groovy.
The 2008 Van Wild in the Parks kicked off with the 14 & Under Division. These groms were rabid and frothing at the mouth for a chance to qualify for the $30,000.000 WITP Championships coming up Sat Oct 18, 2008 at Phoenix’s Rio Vista Skatepark! No time was wasted as these guys flew around the park trying to nail noteworthy tricks in all three WITP zones. It seemed like it took only a minute before this goal was accomplished! Everyone skated hard and the final results ended up being some of the closest we’ve seen yet! Sam Hampton took 1st, Tommy Wejkszner 2nd and Antoni Cimoszko claimed 3rd.
The 15 & Over Division were off to the races next and made their winning intentions clear! We were blown away by their intensity and style in making difficult tricks appear next to normal. These scurvy dogs were a cutthroat lot and kept everyone’s eyes glued on the park! Needless to say, with names like Jordan Repin (nollie back lip down the 9-set) and Jonathan Reichert (switch three flip, switch frontside flip) the competition was razor sharp! After hairs were split and scores tallied, Jordan Repin was crowned 1st, Tom Korop, 2nd and Greg Fujiwara 3rd!
The vaunted Pro-Am Division rounded out the mayhem and sent everyone home stoked! John Hanlon (2nd at 2007 WITP Champs), Micky Papa, Mike “Hashbrown” Schulze, Matt Berger and Dustin Locke (5th at 2007 WITP Champs) were just a few of the venerable names populating this group. As can be expected, these guys had everyone’s hands red from clapping and my voice hoarse from yelling. Hanlon was on a mission looking to win for the 3rd straight year and didn’t disappoint! He quickly nailed a smooth gap to back tail, a kickflip back lip down the 9 set and a switch three flip to put him out in front! Dustin Locke responded with a gap to back lip, “Hashbrown” nailed a nollie b/s bigspin and Micky Papa threw down a kickflip front crooks at the buzzer to have all of us running around like maniacs! Bang, bang, bang!
Thanks to Russ Brummer and everyone else at the City of Port Coquitlam as well as park hosts Jonathan Reichert and Mike Rogers for all their hard work and WITP support. Thanks also to Adam Field, Danny Koriath and Leroy Seymour for judging, Liam Ellicott for filming, Heather Favalaro for tabulating not to mention Volcom’s own Rob Williamson, Dirk Yarmush and Tyler Quarles for all their support. Last but not least, thanks to Electric for stoking the kids with stickers and the winners with shades.
