2009 Wild In The Parks: Skatepark of Tampa Results
The fifth stop on Volcom’s 2009 North American Wild in the Parks tour came and went in a flash at the Skatepark of Tampa on Saturday, June 27th!
Since their inception in 1993, the Skatepark of Tampa has cultivated its reputation as one of the most dominant and recognizable names in skateboarding. They’re renowned for hosting and running events around the world so we were stoked to have a chance to amalgamate our respective scenes. Interestingly enough, this past weekend’s Wild in the Parks marked the 1st time an outside crew has had the chance to put on an event at the park. In addition to making us feel warm and fuzzy, being the 1st also brings about some pressure. Thankfully everything went smoothly and as you’ll see, the skating was a helluva conversation piece.
Registration began at 10am and after a few minutes our defenses were nearly overwhelmed by the quickly growing mob of soon-to-be WITP participants. We braced for impact and were able to maintain something resembling organization at ground zero. That is until raindrops the size of sinister ill-tempered squirrels thoroughly drenched everything/everyone caught in their path. Extreme.
The 14 & under division got off and running around 11:30am and these kids wasted no time in making their winner intentions clear to everyone in attendance! Alex Pellegrino was in the 1st heat and heavy favorite to take home top honors, Living up the hype, he threw down a varial heelflip, nollie fullcab and a feeble/smith combo! It didn’t take long for the rest of the field to pick up on his cue and put on a show of their own! When the dust settled, Alex Pellegrino had taken 1st, Kevin Sikes locked down 2nd and Jamie Foy a very respectable 3rd.!
Before we could wipe our brows and say “balderdash my unmentionables are toasty!” the 15 & over division grabbed center stage and got down to business! With familiar faces like Gio Georgallis and Brandon Nelson on the scene, we knew the ride would be titillating to say the least. We saw kickflip front boards, nollie b/s bigspins and more then a few nollie heelflips! Needless to say, the tricks were impressive and the scores tight! Later on at awards it was Brian Brown claiming 1st, Ryan Parrott 2nd and Nick Blanco a close 3rd!
This year’s Pro-Am finals were absolutely insane! There were nearly 50 rippers from all over the southeast vying for one of the coveted invitations to the $20,000.00 WITP Championships (Sat Sept 26)! With so much talent spread throughout the three heats, there wasn’t a dull moment to be found. So many tricks went down that I won’t even try to scratch the surface here. Seeing is believing so I suggest you take a few minutes and watch the video. I can tell you that after more then an hour of anarchy, Ian Gow landed in 1st, CJ Dixon 2nd and Dylan Perry was hot on their heels in 3rd!
We want to send a huge thanks to Ryan Clements, Barak Wiser and the rest of the good people at the Skatepark of Tampa. We’re stoked to be involved in the scene there and this was hopefully the 1st of many WITPs in Tampa. Thanks also to our judges John “Gonzo” Gow, Pat “The Recliner” Stiener and Scotty “The Body” Conley. Thanks to Volcom’s Todd Causey and John Prosceno for helping hold things down from A to Z as well as Electric and Vestal for supporting with prizes!
