Flashback Friday Brian Boyd at Cedar Crest

Way back when vert was king, the 80’s you had two choices pretty much. The west coast and the east coast. The east coast actually gave the West Coast a run for it’s money as far as vert ramps went. In the mid atlantic region alone you had Hell Ramp, Ocean City, Busters, Keystone, Cheapskates and more. The godfather of all ramps, world wide was Cedar Crest. Mark Hooper had it built in the middle of his dads country club not too far from Washington DC. You could do whatever you wanted and people did. Gwar played there, Bad Brains, GI and others. Things got insane. The skating was insane, people came from all over the world to skate, hell to live there. It was 24 feet wide, like 9.5′ transition and 20″ of vert with a steel surface. The locals were gnarly, mix in the visitors and you can fill in the rest. Let’s see, Mike Mapp, Pat Clark, Josh Marlowe, Neil Blender, Tony Hawk, Buster Halterman, Ken Sigafoos, Dave Tobin, Hound Dog, Bucky Lasek, Dan Brown, Fred Smith, Rob Mertz, Jimmy Murphy, Neal Hendrix (maybe), John Gibson, Ken Sigafoos, Reese Simpson, Troy Chasen, Dan Haymen, Lawrence, Jason Farrell, Bert Lamar, Caleb Moore, Marcus, Dave Lemieux, Rick Charnoski, Keith Lenharr, Blaze Blouin, Tony Mag (set the world record highest air there) were just some of the many heads that rolled through or lived there. The sessions could get hectic; 4 guys would drop in and ride, the crowd would be yelling “take him out” and the last guy left got to start his run. Brian Boyd from Virginia just ripped that place apart. He did shit that would still be gnarly today. One day I cruised up there and he was blasting big ol ollies to fakie six feet out and drifting 5 feet across the ramp. Who does that today even? Brian ripped so hard, then got hurt, came back and so on. He rode for G & S for a bit but never made it big or anything. The crest went from like 1986 to 1990 or something like that.

Brian Boyd does a hell of a Madonna way back when vert was king. By the way, thats none other than J-Grant Brittain shooting on the deck. Sorry the picture sucks it is a print, blown up on a xerox in the 80’s then scanned into my computer
