CROSLAND: Flashback Friday - More East Coast
OG east coast Barker Barrett does a wallride at Shadyskates in Pittsburgh, PA. This must have been 86 or 87. Shadyskates had a little indoor park and they through some contests in the winter time. They were called Nightmare on Penn Ave. Makes me wanna say they were at Halloween but then I remember stories of Josh Marlowe doing 360’s on the PA turnpike to get there and being freezing ass cold so it makes me think they were in the middle of winter. Anyway people came from all over because, what the hell else you gonna do on the east coast in the 80’s.
Way back in the 80’s our friend Parker told us about Cascade Skatepark just outsdie the beltway in Baltimore. He said it was still there and the kidney was just covered up, so we checked it out. We found a business sitting on the location of the clover. However the snake run was outside and although mostly full of dirt, some of it was dug out. Luck would have we got to skate it a little bit.

Back in the 80’s you had to build a lot of your own terrain and Warren’s ramp in Vista was one of the premier spots in the world. At 24 feet wide wide, 10 foot transitions and 2 feet of vert and well built, people flocked to Warren’s back yard. Dan Wilkes from Texas was one of them. Warrens ramp is still kind of standing, the transitions are there but no flat
Mark “Hosse” Hostetter at the Vista Ramp again. Mark rode for Alva a bit and then stepped away from the limelight. Mark’s mom, Peggy Cozens, actually started Transworld as a cleaner alternative to Thrasher. Of course people still bag on Transworld for being too clean but none the less Transworld’s quality upped the ante
Terrell Schmitt came out to San Diego North County from Colorado. He worked at McGills and later Tracker. This ripped backyard pools so hard, yet never was too well known. Skating backyards was not as “cool” then (1992) as it is now. Terrell is doing an ollie over the deathbox at the old clam shell in Hemet, CA. First of all this pool was 13 feet so this trick is gnarly. Second of all the Mexican Mafia owned this pool shot porno’s there
Jason Jesse was, and still the man. He followed the path of no one. His mixture of power and style were un matched. Of course today he is still known as a bike builder, living in Santa Cruz and you can still buy his board from Santa Cruz. This picture is from maybe 1988 at the Fallbrook Ramp. Fallbrook was as close to a pro training facility at the time; kinda like a DC Ramp today. It was in Tobin’s yard and access was pretty hard. On any given day you would see the likes of Jason Jesse, Steve Claar, Kne Park, Ray Underhill, Tony Hawk and more skating. Think it was 32′ wide, 10′ tranny and 1′ of vert.
