Everybody had so much fun at the Pro Tec Pool Party that Steve Steadham decided to throw another pool contest in So Cal. In addition there were some am bowl skating and some am street skating as well. This whole thing was not nearly the level of the pool party but it was fun and it had the vibe of a skate contest in the 80’s – everyone pretty much knew each other. It was a good time.
The fact that the flier just said start time 9 am meant this contest had vagueness written all over it, the flier stated no times for any division or anything so it was un-organized to start with. It said it started at 9 am so I showed up at noon. Darrin Jenkins said come back at 4 so I came back at 3 and was surprised to see the 12 and under rippers still at it with more divisions to go before the pros. You knew right then you could go for a surf or a burrito at Raul’s and still come back but I watched the ams for the fun of it. It was kinda a clusterfuck but that gave it the whole 80’s, skateboarding is not in the X Games yet and we don’t know what the fuck we are doing vibe so seemed kinda cool, except the pros did get not enough time. The pros were pushed back until there was only time enough for two runs each. I am not sure how they got all those divisions done in a day anyway.
Ok so even though the pros only had a few runs it was clear that the only competition was for 2nd place because Andy Mac destroyed the place. He did so many tricks both old and new school clearly won. Jake Piasecki always lays it on the line and his solid runs earned him second place. For the Masters it was not so clear cut. Josh Nelson killed it and had the sickest lines. In my eyes he could have won. McGill tried some 540’s, 25 years after he invented the McTwist so you gotta give credit for that. After that it was pretty much roll the dice for results, 3rd through 8th place all killed it and anyone of them could have gotten third. The styles are different and I do not know the judging criteria so that is all I gotta say about that. Lyn-z had some man size tricks like big airs, roll in’s and a frontside invert but Julie Kindtred had a few better line so she got first, it could have gone either way.
Some people were un happy with the lack of organization but You could look at it as a bad contest or a really good time skating with friends and the dudes from the magazines in the 80’s. It was rad to Tom Knox skate, Andy Mac kill it, Josn Nelson make like 10 backside airs in a day. It was sick if it was a clusterfuck and I am stoked Steadham tried to throw it together.
Master of Ceremonies Dave Duncan knows all about skateboarding and snowboarding
Jake Duncombe and Rob Loriface stopped by to say hi, so did Bucky Lasek and Danny Way
Megan Brown got 3rd place in the girls division
Julie Kindstred took the win for the girls
Lyn-Z with a crail
Whoa! Frontside invert for Lyn-Z
I think this is Zane Timpson but he already knows you need to tuck knee those frontside airs
Ethan going big
Austin Poynter, see it is not just old guys skating pools!
Speaking of old guys, heres classic Eddie Reautigui, one of the original Dagggers
1980’s street rat Tom Knox can still pull mean Madonnas. He wrote an article about the event, see for yourself. Tom was not too happy with the event and he is right from one perspective but I saw it is a fun event for everyone not a big pro deal, that is the beauty of skating, think whatever the hell you want
Event winner Mike McGill is sponsored by Wal Mart, I have never bought anything at Wal Mart but at least one skateboarder get some money from the big corporation, surely a lot of people will not agree with this statement
