The first annual Block Rock and Session presented by Skateboardrev.com took place on June 21st “National Go Skateboarding Day” in Jamestown New York. The festival blended music and skateboarding, and was a great environment for the skateboard community.
The festival took place in front of Suburban Blend in downtown Jamestown and proved that there is more than a skateboarding presence in Jamestown. It’s more of an east coast movement of Skateboarders. Who would have thought this from a city known for its brick streets.
The community helping hands project brought in 4 ramps and some additional features and put together a street course right in downtown Jamestown. 70 skaters showed up from the northeast to either free skate on the ramps we built, compete in one of our three contests, or just to listen to the music from the DJ and three bands we brought in.
The day’s contests were a huge success. We had blue skies in the morning for the first 3 hours of the event. The first contest was the high ollie contest and we started around 10:00 am. Each skater had two attempts at each height. This portion of the event filtered through pretty quick and only the guys that could pop the highest were left. In the end it was #104 Kevin Gates that popped the highest ollie. He was measured in at 40 inches. In the early afternoon a serious rainstorm moved in and put a hold on the game of skate. All of the skaters wanted to continue skating even in the rain and after it settled a little we continued the game. We decided it would be best to find an indoor location to finish the game so we all skated up to the closest parking garage and finished the game off there. It was here that Andy Geary prevailed over all the skaters. This kid is a sick skater and you will be seeing plenty more of him in the near future. The ground was still wet outside and we decided it would be best not to have the street course competition and instead we decided to have a crowd judged best trick contest on a flat bar. This session got intense and some serious tricks were thrown down. In the end it was Bill Cooley that won with a nollie backlip 270 out.
The bands provided some serious energy for the competitors. Hot Stenographer, The Audience and Junkbutton played their sets and got everyone downtown super stoked on the environment.
Billabong, Circa Shoes, Dakine, Etnies Shoes, Dragon Optics, Electric Optics, Syndrome Distribution and South Shore Distribution provided prizes for the top placing skaters.
