Help Support Breast Cancer at Skate the Lake

Skateboarders of all ages and skill levels will have a great time riding along the bike path of Lake Tahoe, and the Santa Monica boardwalk at Skate the Lake 2008. Presented by Tahoe Longboards, the event kicks off Saturday August 23rd, and August 30th with the goal to raise over $10,000 for Boarding for Breast Cancer.

Skate the Lake is an exciting, one of a kind relay along the shores of beautiful Lake Tahoe and the Los Angeles coastline. Athletes can sign up to skate a two-mile stretch of the skate or all 27(Tahoe) 19(L.A.). Sponsored by Tahoe Longboards, the goals of the event are to raise money, increase breast cancer awareness, and educate about the importance of early detection and the value of an active lifestyle.

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women today. The chance of developing invasive breast cancer at some point in a woman’s life is about 1 in 8. It is estimated that in 2008 about 213,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in U.S. women, and 1,700 in men.

Breast cancer rates have been on the rise since the 1980s. The State of California has an average of over 21,000 cases each year, and North American women have the highest rate of breast cancer in the world. Between 1997 and 2001 alone, over 600 new cases of breast cancer came from the Lake Tahoe Basin.

The good news is there are over two million breast cancer survivors in the United States, and death rates have been declining as a result of early detection and improved treatment options.

All proceeds from Skate the Lake will go to Boarding for Breast Cancer, a non-profit; youth focused education, awareness, and fundraising foundation. Their mission is to increase awareness about breast cancer, the importance of early detection, and the value of a healthy lifestyle.

There will be a registration party the Friday before each skate, featuring three bands, August 22nd Tahoe (Lakeview Tahoe City) and August 29th L.A. (Arbor Boards Venice). The registration parties will have raffles and giveaways (complete long boards) as well as three bands. Each athlete will receive a goodie bag full of sponsor product.

The entry fee for Skate the Lake is $20, but fees will be waived for those who find sponsors willing to donate more. For additional information on Boarding for Breast Cancer and a list of their events, go to b4bc.org. For more information regarding sponsorships or to register, log on to skatethelake.org.
