These
two photos show how the spontaneity of skateboarding shines through,
even in a nationally televised extremely organized event. The situation
was that the skate street finals were postponed due to rain. Some of
the street skaters wanted to keep skating so they headed in to the
indoor BMX park course and started skating. Luckily for me, I was
shooting vert, right next door. So I walked over and started shooting
the impromptu skate session. Usually at these contest, the
photographers are extremely limited as to where they can shoot. Since
things were informal, I kind of weaseled my way to a good spot. Plus
Dave Duncan and everyone knows me from shooting for the X Games, Vans,
Transworld and so on. The biggest challenge was not getting hit…it was
hectic.
So
the first shot is when Sheckler jumped over this big gap, about a
twelve foot drop, just to do it. He tried 5-10 times, and then made it.
The second shot is when Ryan did it in the actual “best trick” contest
that happened on the fly. The second time it took him 3-5 tries to make
it. As if once was not enough, he does it twice.
