Today was the Soul Bowl comp up at the US Open of surfing in H.B., Surf City USA. Talk about a mob scene, it was crazy. The worlds best surfers, TONS of hot chicks and some true legends of skateboarding wre in the house, it was sick. Oh, yea there were FMX, bikes and tons of other stuff. The US Open of surfing has been going down for over 25 years, it is legendary. The Soul Bowl is but a side show of the whole thing but it is so great to see the legendary skaters up close. The skating is not worthy of the seniors home either, the action was hot…read on.

Today they had 3 groups of skaters. The first group was the masters, age 35-39. However a few older guys are so good, they get grouped in here. Like Tony Magnussen. He is over forty but kicked the Masters butts. Tony has involved with a number of companies over the years like Uncle Wiggly, H-Street, Osiris…and more. I see Tony a lot at the YMCA.

Henry Guiterrez is a ripper from Virginia Beach. He won last year, got 2nd this year. Henry did a 540 which is pretty hot for a dude over 40. He is great to watch. Look how tweaked this lien air is!

2_henryg.jpg

In one run Tony mag did a Mc Twist (shown) and front 5 rodeo, like Shaun White. Jeseus, T Mag could maybe get top ten in the fucking X Games, seriously. Although vert is pretty dead so other than the top 5 vert skaters, most of em are old 80’s dudes. but I digress…

Chances are that this man affects you if you ride a skateboard. Paul Schmitt is the man behind PS Stix, who makes boards for Element, Alien Workshop, Black label, etc, you get the idea. He makes a LOT of skateboards in the USA. By the way, buy US made skateboard only. I was told recently the Indy trucks are made in China and the distrubutors take off the made in china logos. I do not know if that is true so but a reliable source told me. Jeez, I am proabably gonna get killed for saying that. Anyway Paul Schmitt is a super nice dude and employs Americans to make boards.

Ben Schroeder is fucking insane to watch, eggplant

5_schroeder.jpg

Ben Schroeder with a footplant off the ladder they put into the bowl so every can get out. He is a fucking nut.

6_schroeder.jpg

Henry G again with a tailslide. He was part of a group of skaters that came up in the 80’s in VA Beach when they built a series of public ramps; Mount Trashmore, Lynnhaven, and another one, I forget the name.

7_henryg.jpg

The Gladiator like setting

8_overview.jpg

Tons of hot chicks. You should go tomorrow, seriously

9_chicks.jpg

Eric Nash with an Indy air with mad steez. Look at his hand, holy shit. Eric Nash got 3rd in the masters group.

11_nash.jpg

Stagoo or Steve Steadham was on fire in the Grandmasters group. The Grandmasters are 40 and over. Stagoo got 6th but I thought he could have made the podium. Either way, this backside bonless was sick.

12_stagoo.jpg

L-r, Steve Olson, Christian Hosoi and Dave Hackett. No truer group of skate legends exists. Olsen was the 1977 world champ of skateboarding. He came to get his trophy in a limo, wasted and threw it in the trash. Olsen is a true survivor, he is always going to be involved in skateboarding. Hosoi needs no intro. Hackett, well I talked about Hackett last week.

13_legends.jpg

Dave Duncan is the voice of skateboarding and snowboarding - literally. He announces the winter and summer X Games. Here he is lopping a backside ollie over the hip. Speaking of hips, a few years ago he had his hips replaces - gnarly.

14_duncan.jpg

Salba fucking rules! He won the first vertical skate contest in 1978 and today (28 years later) he gets second place in the grndmasters gladiator division.

15_salba.jpg

Troy Chasen with an Axe murder which is a fingerflip to nose/tail grab to tail. Troy used to live Washington DC with a bunch crazy dudes from Texas and skate, you guessed it, Cedar Crest. Troy is from Texas though. He got 4th in the grandmasters clash.

16_chasen.jpg

Jesse Martinez is one of the OG street skaters. Back with Jeff Heartsell, Aaron “Fingers” Murray, Natas, Gonz, GSD and that whole early-mid 80’s street skating group. He is from Venice and not someone to fuck with.

17_martinez.jpg

Ok, now we are getting serious. Duane fucking Peters. This guys is a miracle to watch. He is the master of disaster. Always out of in control but on top of it too. It is worth it to watch this guy skate in your lifetime. If you do not, you are a fag.

18_dp.jpg

D.P. again with 360 invert, fuck you! He is 45 fucking years old. How old is your dad? third place in the Dinosaur division

19_dp.jpg

Salbas older brother Micke won the (Grandmasters) whole thing today. Egg

20_malba.jpg

Duane Peters with a Sweeper. he somehow survived his live and cleaned up, does not drink, got married to Cory Parks and deserves to live forever off his contributions to skateboarding and underground culture alone, oh and fuck you!

21_dp.jpg

Finally, there was a best trick contest that had some modern skating. Sergie Ventura with a One footed japan 540…whaaaat?

22_sergie.jpg

Sandro Dias with a Judo to frigid 540 during the best trick contest. I can NOT wait to see Sandro in the X Games next week.

23_sandro.jpg

Sandro gets slobby during the awards ceremony and Bostick kept trying to get him to stop skating

24_sandro.jpg

It was insane to see Micke Alba, Steve Alba and Duane Peters take the top three spots. to quote DP “this is the way it should be”
