Jeff Zimmerman Interview Interview by Brandon Moore
Words By Nate Sherwood - "Jeff Z is the man. He never dubs over footage and never losses his brain. He never misses a trick. He is as solid as it gets and he can ollie high as fuck. The dude rips 2 thumbs up!..."
- Jeff chillin in the car
Name - Jeff Zimmerman DOB - September 18, 1987 Hometown - Born in LA Current Location - Carlsbad California Sponsors - I guess you could say Monster flow and NSS flow, plus lots of other filming related perks, boards from 1031, been getting some Vitamin Water
Can you describe a typical day in your life? Wake up, fall asleep, wake up a few more times. Sometimes help out at Carlsbad High / Calavera Middle School. I get paid for that but I never wake up early enough. Go to class if I have one at MiraCosta or Cal State San Marcos. Otherwise go skating or filming with whoever else is around. Capture and edit footy only after midnight. Which is probably why I can't wake up early.
- Switch Ollie, sick pop!
So you usually have a pretty busy schedule? It varies because a lot of this is freelance, but I go from having tons of free time, to staying up all night to finish stuff. Last week I had a ton of school work, since I put all of it off because of ASR. I had a test and the night before instead of studying we had to finish up to 1031 video. Up until about 4 AM doing Spanish homework or finishing the video. 1031 video comes out 10/31. Check it out. It will be premiering at Hensley's Restaurant in Carlsbad.
Very nice, does that ever get stressful? Uhh... It's time consuming but not reallt stressful. It only gets stressful when I have so much school work and film work I don't have time to skate. I end up skating a lot at night at the park by my house (Calavera) around 2 AM. The neighbors love it.
Haha. How long have you been skating? Not really sure... Ollied up my first curb right before High School. Maybe 6 years after being able to ollie up a curb. Tons of ankle rolls and crutches.
- 6 Stack deck ollie
That seems to come with the job. When did you get into filming? We started filming maybe 6 years ago with a photo camera that had a video mode. We made a full on video with that.
Wow. That must have been quite a task? Then I decided I was a big spender and got a canon ZR80 from Fry's for 300$, and a 30$ fisheye. We used that for awhile. About 2-3 years ago I found a Sony VX2000 on craigslist for 800$. Wound up going to LA with my friend Ian and meeting this black guy in a sketchy Jack in the Box lot. That was the start of my filming career. From then moved on to a VX1000 and a DVX100A. Oh I believe the VX2 was stolen. Not to be racist... But you can just tell.
Damn, that's a bummer. No no, not stolen from me. I think the guy stole it and sold it. And the DVX100A may have been stolen too. Sketchy lady from craigslist tried to sell me a broken camera. I was smart and brought a battery and ended up getting it half off and getting it fixed.
- Doubles Rock with Shane
Well that's a plus. I coulda got screwed on that one.
Very true. At least you lucked out. Who all have you worked with? Too many people to name them all. Pierre Luc Gangon and Taylor Smith from Monster. Alex Perelson. Doing something with Greg Lutzka and Jake Brown for them in the future. 1031 guys Dan Nepscha, Kristian Svitak, Chad Knight, Ben Rayborn. A lot of locals. Tim Thomas, Anthony Nuckols, Chucky Jones, Ian Young, Joe Sharrif. Doing some stuff with John Lupher. Talked to Louie Barletta on the phone for about an hour the other night. Maybe doing something with him. Brian Sumner.
What are your plans for the near future? Filming a lot more... Sent my resume off to 30+ companies at ASR. Skating as much as I can. Graduating college. Making money, having fun.
What route would you rather be taking? Skating or filming? Both? bills need to be paid. Obviously skating but filming is more realistic.
- Switch from kicker
What or who inspires you? Oh shit, the tough one comes out. A lot of people are dicks so... anyone who sticks to what they do. Eric Koston. Not sure who inspires me, I'd deffinately like to thank Nate Sherwood and Chad Knight for helping me get started in filming. And my parents for loaning me money to buy cameras because the banks are closed when I go to buy a camera in a parking lot at 3 AM.
Where is your favorite place to be? Mexico? Haha, just kidding, never been there. I really like it here in Carlsbad. I guess that's why I stay. If I went anywhere else I'd probably have to start all over again with filming, and lose my various jobs where I have fun and get paid.
It seems things like that all stick to the west coast. I think they all stick to So Cal. I went around ASR introducing myself to various companies and they were mostly located around me.
So Jeff, got any other hobbies? I used to play paintball but I stopped. I used to play the drums... Now I just bang my desk in class and annoy everyone. I used to do everything, skating takes over though.
- Tre Flip
How bout music, any favorites? I was into MGMT for a few days. I had a really annoying song by Yelle stuck in my head this morning. I'm actually trying to film something for the Jonas Brothers street team. Doing it just to have it on the resume. Been talking to the street team manager and she's down. Now just tryin to figure out a time when they are all free and in LA, probably after tour. Also doing something with Weezer hopefully. I was an extra in a Weezer video (The troublemaker music video, check it out) and met the band / manager.
Any siblings? Nope, only child. Well I guess Hayley Powers is my sister but not blood.
Anything else important going on in life right now? I'm watching Mad TV right now, that's pretty important. My birthday is the 18th.
Would you rather be a hot dog or a hamburger? Hmmm... Well a hamburger has more balance. But I guess a hot dog is a wiener in buns. So it depends what context. Haha just kidding.
Ever been anywhere besides CA? Yeah, the usual... Vegas, Tenesee, Hawaii a few months ago. Oregon I think. Arizona, Utah, Colorado is a possibility. Probably been to all 50 states.
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be? I like it here! I don't really know, Hawaii was nice, Vegas is fun.
- Pop over the table
Never had the urge to go to Europe or anything? No. Might get dragged there next summer though.
Skating is amazing over there though. I bet they are all doing interviews over there saying how great skating is over here. The grass is always greener.
Thats probably true. First thing that comes to mind. Airplanes - No Mcdonalds - Cows The Bible - I'm Jewish lol so.. no Bling - Shiny, gangster Florida - Gators Skateboardrev.com - Future job? Andrew Reynolds - Baby Family - First
Are you a myspace whore? No way, I ask everyone who adds me who they are and how I know them unless it's obvious. And I still have too many friends.
- Back 5-0 during the fires
Anything you would like to say to the people who are gonna read this? Keep skating, don't buy an expensive camera just because you have the money. Film on something shitty / decent until you decide you really wanna do it. You skate better and have more fun if you skip a day every once in a while... although it's hard. Don't trust peopel unless they deserve it.
Shoutouts? Thanks to my parents, Tracie Powers, Tracie's parents, Nate Sherwood, Seth Pulford at Monster, Ian Young, Kristian Svitak, Chad Knight, Dan Nepscha, Cody Cook, NSS shoes and 1031 Skateboards, and Skateboardrev.com.
